Simple Solutions for 2013

January 1, 2013
2013...Write, eat, earn, repeat.

2013…Write, eat, earn, repeat.

Every year on January 1 I sit down with Craig and complete a vision map for the coming year (see 2012’s here). It will hang on my refrigerator all year long to serve as a reminder of my goals. This year I left a little extra space to breathe and am focused on three things: eating well, writing about eating well, earning a stable income, and doing as much of it as possible!  These are my favorite words and phrases from the 2013 board:

There’s an art to this kind of balance.

The life of a salesman. Why common courtesy has everything to do with it

October 23, 2012

Salesman. The word inspires fear in most consumers. Someone who isn’t quite human. Someone who makes his living convincing other people to spend their hard-earned money. A person not to be trusted. I’m not exactly sure why that is, but it makes me angry.

I’m tired of hearing entrepreneurs say, with fear-tinged pompousness, “I’m NOT a salesman.”  I’ve worked in sales of some sort my entire life. If you own your own business, you damn well better be a salesman — and a good one. Quite the opposite of what most people expect, I find great sales people to be rare and talented creatures, strong and resilient individuals who can put everything on the line every day. Unlike most people in the workforce, Read more…

Celebrating Banned Books Week 2012: Renia reads “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne

October 4, 2012

Since the inception of Banned Books Week in 1982, libraries and bookstores throughout the country have staged local read-outs—a continuous reading of banned/challenged books—as part of their activities. For the second year in a row, readers from around the world can participate in the Banned Books Virtual Read-Out. This is the third of my favorite frequently banned books. Come back every day this week for a new one.

The meaning of Mommypreneur: Show your pride!

September 20, 2012

To the highest leadership among women it is given to hold steadily in one hand the sacred vessels that hold the ancient sanctities of life, and in the other a flaming torch to light the way for oncoming generations.

Anna Garlin Spencer

The words “mommy” and “entrepreneur” have many things in common. Both conjure up dueling feelings of passionate, meaningful work and curl-up-in-a-ball-to-cry stress. Both, when bestowing themselves on a lucky individual, require a transformation. What once was must be forsaken for what could be, through both triumph and loss, to give life to something new.

As more women take on each role with greater success, it is time for us to support each other.  If you are a mother and entrepreneur, or Read more…

Staying true to the title: Renia Grows

BNI St Pete Times

One of my last meetings as President of BNI Leaders by Design Chapter from an article in The St. Pete Times

Six years ago this week I walked into a room of 30 small business owners committed to two words that, as a banker, I never had heard applied to business: Givers Gain®. On that Thursday morning these vastly different business people came together before the sun was up to help each other. It didn’t take much  to convince me; by the end of the 30-second commercials presented by each member, I knew this was a place I could build from. What I didn’t know then is how that meeting would change my life.

Just a year into my BNI journey I drew from the inspiration my peers provided and started my own business. Then, the leadership of BNI West Central Florida asked me to join the Director-Consultant team.  For the past four years I’ve enjoyed working with nearly 2,000 members in the Tampa Bay Area as a Director-Consultant, trainer, social media consultant and fellow business owner.

BNI helped me learn how to make money in less time and I’ve done a lot of laughing and learning as I made new friends. The tools BNI provided me helped me become the Mommypreneur I am today, rather than the stressed-out, angry banker I was at that first meeting.

So, it is with Read more…
